    East and West Egg

    含意
•The East Egg consists of the already established wealthy class.
The West Egg, in contrast, consists of people been born under less comfortable circumstances.
Tom and Daisy live on the East which is far more refined and well bred.
Nick and Gatsby are on the West which is for people who don't have any real standing, even if they have money.

    選文
•I lived at West Egg, the—well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.

    The Green Light

    含意
•Gatsby has spent his whole life longing for something Daisy. And no matter how much money, success, acceptance he has he never feels complete.
•Everyone has something that they long and search for that is just off in the distance. That is the green light.

    選文-1
•he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.

    選文-2
•Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. And one fine morning——
